Dermarolling AustinMany men and women today use dermarollers to treat a wide range of skin related problems. A derma (skin) roller is a small plastic barrel-shaped roller device with hundreds of miniscule titanium needles on it and is a type of MicroNeedling. When the barrel is rolled over an area of skin affected by such issues as stretch marks, scar tissue, acne, wrinkles, cellulite or dark spots, the needles create tiny punctures in the surface of the skin. In response, the body’s defense mechanisms are activated as if there has been a wound to the skin; growth factors are released in the targeted area, remolding the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production. New, healthy skin is formed in the treated area, improving the look and texture of the dermis in the affected area. MicroNeedle roller therapy can safely be done on any part of the body other than the lips and eyelids.

Derma rollers can also be used to facilitate absorption of a skin care product or hair restoration product into the skin or scalp. Because the tiny needles penetrate the hard outer surface of the dermis (without skin damage), this creates hundreds of minute channels through which the product can be absorbed.

Other positive effects of using a micro needling tool such as dermrolling are stimulation of circulation to the surface of the skin, cleaning out pores, and exfoliating excess dead skin cells which may contribute to hair follicle failure in the scalp. These effects can also be achieved with dermaplaning, a safe, painless exfoliation treatment during which a scalpel is used to “shave” or plane away the cells at the skin surface. Dermaplaning is recommended only for use on relatively flat areas of skin on the face, not on the nose or neck. Dermaplaning has the added bonus of removing tiny “peach fuzz” hairs from the treated areas.
